Zumba-ed Out

After a five mile run and hour long zumba class, a dinner of chips, salsa, queso and slurpies was the perfect way to end the day.

Really?!?

Every week we get tons of donations from people in the community for children in the hospital. We are always excited about new stuffed animals.

No so much excited about stuffed animals that will make the kids even more sad than they were before.

Who makes a teddy bear with a frown?

D.C. Cupcakes

We couldn't leave DC without getting the famous cupcakes from the hit show on TLC.

(ok, I have never actually seen the show, but the cupcakes were amazing)

Washington D.C.

We went for a six mile run around the National Mall. We ran past the Capitol Building, Supreme Court Building, WWII Memorial, and Washington Monument. Best run of 2011!

X-Rays

Teddy's too fluffy.

We tried to find some bones.

Storm Chasers

A massive storm system traveled east across the U.S. today... and Meg and I happened to be driving to NC at the same time. We literally drove with the storm the entire 14 hour trip. There were over 9 tornadoes that touched down in NC and VA just as we arrived. As we drove, we reviewed everything we new about tornado safety, just in case we ran into one. It was then we realized that everything we "knew" about tornadoes we learned on either Twister or Wizard of Oz. Lucky for us, we didn't actually see one.

Bowling

Who knew there was a bowling alley at UIC?

Park Singles met up at the bowling alley for some fun, friends, and some fun friendly competition.

Resurrection Eggs

Each egg has an object that describes what happened when Jesus was crucified and rose again. Students love them every year!

Diabetes Sucks

While working with kids in the hospital we use medical equipment to create pieces of art. This familiarizes the children with the medical equipment, lets them be creative, and express their feelings.

He is Risen! (Indeed)

Cambridge celebrated Christ's resurrection with a musical program tonight. I was reminded of the beauty of simple faith.

Gotcha!

In every game of Hide and Seek, Amro hides in the same exact spot. This time, he switched it up and found some place new. I actually had difficulty finding him. As you can see, he was excited.

85 Degrees

The first warm day of spring meant that all of the hibernating Chicagoans were finally outside. I biked to the park, watched a flag football tournament, took a nap, read a book, and got a nice sunburn. Spring is the best.

Gorilla Challenge

A mixture of The Amazing Race and a picture scavenger hunt. The twelve clues led us all over downtown Chicago. From Buckingham Fountain to the Harold Washington Library to the Chicago Cultural Center, we traveled over six miles on foot to complete the challenge.

Preparation

The night before the great Gorilla Challenge called for some serious Chicago research (and of course the making of some name tags).

Soft Pretzels....Second Try.

The trick to making yummy soft pretzels is putting baking soda in the water.

Over the next three weeks we made them three times at the hospital.

They were a favorite!

DA BULLS

Floor seats to a Bulls game was an awesome way to spend a Tuesday evening. It was a close game, but the Bulls beat Phoenix by 2 (or 3.. I can't remember). The game was exciting, but we had just as much fun memorizing the LuvaBulls cheers, gator clapping for Joakim Noah, and spotting "famous" people in the stands.

Crazy Gates

My students and I created this game to pass the time while we wait for their parents to pick them up. The point is to have your body become a themed "gate" and to not let the other students pass. I believe in this picture I am the "Crazy Frenchman Gate."

I know, we are weird.

Syrup

The sap is running, which means that Dad is basically living at the sugar bush, working all day (and night) to make it into maple syrup. How can you not love coming home to this?

April 2, 2011

Tricky.

One of the Alderman's decided to make his flyers agains his opponent look like a ticket.

Didn't help him at all.

Solis still one.

April Fools!

That is my desk in the middle of the hallway, thanks to some eighth grade (or fourth grade?) pranksters. My class was dying to get them back, but I told them that the last time I was in a prank war, I was in college, and it ended with a dead bird on my desk. The moral of the story: Don't get into a prank war with people who are grosser than you are.

Pockets

-1 quarter

-1 rubber band

-1 paper clip

-roughly 25 silly bandz (in random shapes)

-1 base ten cube

There are always a few surprises when a teacher cleans out her pockets at the end of the school day.
